Match Report 4th May - 4th's - Well would you Tony and Nathan it!!

Wow after  much thought and feeling speechless on Saturday night.
4ths Game 2 report:
We took on Newhaven 2s again, depleted down to 9 men(skipper lied saying someone else was turning up).
We won the toss and decided to bat as weather was rather hit and miss.
The skipper and Gillie went out to set a target, in fact Gillie set the target scoring his first century for RCC!
With great assistance from Lewis,Nick,Chris and the ever young Cliff we posted 156.
After tea we set about defending our total, with only 9 men and 5 bowlers bowling for the first time this season it was never going to easy.
Nathan bowled a pacey and accurate first spell and bagged a wickets with Callum backing him up admirably swing the ball of great lengths.
Mark came on for his first bowl in 9 months and took a wickets late on after fooling the batsmen with a straight ball.
With Newhaven 80 off for 2 at drinks things were not looking good, but credit too everyone spirits were high with Callum and Lewis ensuring heads didn't drop(you have to love thier spirit).
Experience was ordered, Gillie slowed the run rate and Cliff started flighting balls from way up high.
Run rate kept dropping and Chris had 4 overs of medium pace magic 4-2-9-2.
Cliff ended up with a big smile bagging Ray Wells C&B.
Still up against it with 30 runs to play with but needing 4 wickets it was time to let Nathan loose again, Stumps and Toes were needed, boy he delivered 3-0-6-2 for a final spell.
1 wicket required and 7 runs to play with The skipper and Gillie giggled and whispered surely not!
Over to you Cliff, give him a single we cryed and see what their Skipper can do?
Single taken here goes?
Out of the sky (eventually)came Cliffs delivery, their Skipper played 3 different shots at it, it hit his pad, it rolled towards the stumps, it must hit, IT BLOODY DID.
We won 2 from 2 and joint top of the League!!

Moral of the story: Anything is possible!!

Saturday 4th May - 2nd XI Match Report - Not too far away

37 Wides
2 Great catches
A solid 76
&
2 BIG sixes

Our first league game of the season!! A rumble of excitement was flowing through the changing rooms after the toss, customary teeth brushing and pre game showers. George T gave s rousing speech and we were away. Starting well through Jonny G (anguish 5/10) and the fiery Marshall saw few runs off the bat through the first 10 overs. We chopped away a couple of wickets and were in a commanding position. Leg side wides were not our friend though and the Poynings batsmen were able to tick the runs over through a difficult period for them in the middle overs. Aaron Lees bowled with guile and Tom had great rhythm throughout his spell.

There was one particularly special moment in the field. Not when I realised Javed had stuffed toilet roll in his ears for warmth. It was Ali Marshall hurtling towards the pitch from long on towards a towering high ball, before realising he had come too far and spinning round on the ball, leaping high and handsome and plucking the ball with one hand out of the air. An unbelievable grab we were all lucky to witness.

In the last 10 we had Poynings where we wanted them, a tight last 10 and we were well
In the game. Step forward James Yates! Brought in to take the place off and bamboozle their Batsmen with his Romanian googlies, his first over went for 20. (Not helped by Aaron Lees who fell victim to the famous RCC Hill). The oppo ended up on 196, which on balance felt more than they should have got based on our performance in the field.

Opening the batting was Simon Clarke and Josh W. A solid opening stand got us on our way in the run chase before Josh walked for nicking one to the keeper. He then walked back to the crease to the bemusement of their fielders and allowed to continue by the umpire. He did eventually fall victim to the same fate after seeing off the new ball. We managed to keep the runs ticking through several rain delays which took some momentum out of our batting but did give Clarkey a well needed breather. (Clarkey did gesticulate negatively towards the crowd who excitedly encouraged George T to take a quick second when on about 65 and in his 65th over on the field)

In the last 10 we needed 90 and had the wickets in hand to get us over the line. Unfortunately only one of them (Dunstan Big 6 Harris) showed up and we fell just short. Special mention to J Yates who struck the ball very well and then decided to reverse lap sweep to the waiting ring fielder at third man for quick runs in the second to last over)

In summary -

Good - Catches, Vibe
Bad  wides, not enough sixes.

Onwards and upwards next week. A good first showing with plenty to work on.
